A 12-year-old girl with a 40 skincare products arsenal. Teenagers having baby Botox for fear of developing wrinkles. Children choosing a visit to SpaceNK as a birthday treat. Women getting into debt to buy products and procedures that promise to transform thier skin overnight.
These are just some of the disturbing issues Amelia Abraham raised in her very interesting feature first published in The Observer.
This harmful fixation on skincare, now termed dermorexia, is a reflection of the societal pressure to achieve an unrealistic complexion and appears to have become particulalry troublesome since the pandemic. The experiences it describes are akin to body dysmorphic disorder.
