As we mature, collagen and elastin break down in the skin and fragile area, and the lips and under-eye area tend to show this the most. It’s a bugger.
Focusing on the lips, the fat pads and muscles in the area steadily diminish, resulting in thinner and visibly lined lips. They can start to look flatter too.
You may notice your lip colour becoming paler because the blood vessels decrease in the area between your lips and the surrounding skin. This can leave them looking slightly cooler/bluer in tone.
So, what can we do to help when it comes to makeup? A lipliner is the answer.
Still Sassy’s makeup guru David Horne spills the beans on why you should reach for a liner and how to apply.
- Waterproof lip liners are a great choice. Lisa Eldridge’s Enhance and Define pencil is a firm favourite as they are less demanding in terms of high maintenance and will be far more resilient/long-lasting
- Use your lip liner to create volume, and once the border of the lip is restored, feather inwards with the pencil so that when the lip colour wears away during the day, you are not left with a visible drawn edge
- Dior Universal Contour is a transparent lip liner that suits all skin tones and all shades of lipstick. It smoothes and lines lips for a clean, precise lip contour and lasting hold. Alternatively, give Chanel Le Crayon Levres in the shade clear a try
- Transparent liners will also help smooth out any lip border damage and fine lines to prevent lipstick or gloss bleed
- I always recommend you use SPF, and this includes on the lips. Try Carmex Cherry Lip balm SPF15 to protect from sun damage.
- Choose a warmer hue (more orange), as this will be more flattering and help to correct and balance your tones
